Kids love sharks, but it is rare that they get to hear about them in school. Ocean science is not one of the priority topics that is covered, particularly not in the earlier grades. However, it is so important to teach kids about the ocean while they are young. It helps them develop curiosity and interest in the ocean-world and prevents them from developing fears and misconceptions in place of real facts.
This educational shark and ocean curriculum for children is available to teachers all over the world. It is suitable for kids ranging from Kindergarten to grade 4 or 5 in primary school. It has been produced in German, English and Arabic and is currently being presented in schools in Europe, Asia and Afrika. (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Philippines, Indonesia, Mozambique, Egypt and Kenia and many more locations.) In Germany alone this program reaches about 100 thousand kids per year through more than 40 volunteer presenters and teachers.
In addition to a broad spectrum of shark knowledge, the program also focuses on a general understanding of ocean eco systems and the important issue of plastics pollution. Volunteer presenters get outfitted with many interactive components such as models of sharks and sharks teeth, Posters, coloring books, sticker pages, a shark memory game, Videos and photos of sharks. Future plans include collaboration organizations to expand the program to schools in the USA.
